A crack is not a cosmetic problem
Most people treat a cracked screen the way they treat a scratched bike fender, annoying, but harmless. The difference is that your screen is a sealed, layered electronic component. The top glass, the touch digitizer, and the OLED or LCD panel underneath are laminated together, and a crack in the top layer breaks the seal that protects everything below it.
From the day it cracks, three slow processes begin: pressure spreading, contamination, and moisture ingress. None of them announce themselves until something stops working.
How the damage escalates
Watch for these stages. Each one is more expensive than the last, and the jump usually happens with one more drop, one monsoon commute, or one week in a pocket with keys.
- Week 1: a hairline crack, glass-only damage, touch and display still perfect
- Weeks 2–4: cracks branch outward as daily pressure from pockets and taps spreads them
- Then: dead zones or 'ghost touch', the digitizer layer starts failing, phone types by itself
- Next: black ink blots or coloured lines, the OLED panel is bleeding and will keep spreading
- Finally: dust and humidity enter through the crack, corroding connectors well beyond the screen
The cost difference, in rupees
Catch it at stage one and you may only need glass replacement, which starts from around ₹1,499 on many models because the display panel underneath is reused. Wait until the panel bleeds and you are into a full display assembly, starting from ₹3,499 on popular Androids and from ₹8,999 on recent iPhones, final quote after diagnosis.
Let moisture travel down a crack during the rains and you can add board-level cleaning to the bill. We regularly see phones where a ₹1,500 problem became a ₹9,000 one in under six weeks, not because the owner was careless, but because the crack looked stable right up until it wasn't.
There's also resale to think about. A phone traded in with a cracked screen loses far more value than the repair costs, because buyers price in the worst case. Fixing a screen before selling almost always pays for itself.
Living with a crack for a few weeks?
Sometimes the budget says wait. If you must, reduce the pressure and seal the surface while you save up. Move the phone out of tight jeans pockets, flexing is what walks a crack across the screen, and keep it away from heat: a dashboard in May or a charging session under a pillow expands the glass layers at different rates and grows the crack without a single drop.
Also back up the phone now, while the screen still works. If the digitizer dies later, unlocking the phone to copy your photos becomes its own repair job.
When to stop waiting
Stop waiting the moment you see touch misbehaviour, any black spot, or lines on the display, those only spread, and they spread faster in heat. Also stop waiting if the phone is your work device or holds your UPI apps; a screen that types by itself is a genuine security problem.
