7 Signs Your Phone Battery Needs Replacement

Phone batteries are consumables, like tyres. A typical lithium-ion cell is designed for roughly 500 full charge cycles before it drops to about 80% of its original capacity. For most people in India, heavy WhatsApp, UPI, maps in traffic, video on the commute, that point arrives somewhere between 18 and 30 months.

The tricky part is that batteries rarely fail loudly. They fade. You adapt by carrying a power bank, lowering brightness, charging at lunch. Here is how to tell the difference between normal ageing and a battery that genuinely needs to go.

The 7 signs, in order of urgency

If you ticked two or more of these, the battery is the most likely culprit. If you ticked number seven, stop using the phone today, a swollen cell pressing against the display is a safety issue, not just an inconvenience.

  • Sudden shutdowns between 20–40% charge, especially when opening the camera or maps
  • The percentage jumps, 80% to 60% in minutes, or stuck at 1% for an hour
  • The phone feels warm even while idle or doing light tasks like reading
  • A full charge no longer survives a normal workday it used to handle easily
  • Charging has slowed noticeably even with the original adapter and cable
  • The phone only behaves normally while plugged in
  • The back panel or screen is lifting, or the phone no longer sits flat, a swollen battery

Check the actual numbers in two minutes

On iPhone, open Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below 80% maximum capacity, Apple itself considers the battery degraded, and iOS may already be throttling performance to prevent shutdowns. On Android, Samsung users can check Settings → Battery and Device Care → Diagnostics; for other brands, the free AccuBattery app estimates real capacity after a few charge sessions.

Numbers beat feelings here. A phone showing 78% capacity with 700+ cycles is not going to recover with a new charger, a software update, or overnight 'battery calibration' tricks from YouTube. Calibration only fixes the gauge's reporting, not the chemistry, if the cell has lost a quarter of its capacity, no app brings it back.

One more check worth doing: rule out the charger and cable first. Borrow a known-good original adapter for a day. If charging speed returns to normal, you've just saved yourself a battery replacement, frayed cables and tired adapters mimic battery symptoms surprisingly well.

What a replacement should cost

In India, a quality battery replacement typically starts from ₹1,199 for popular Android models and from ₹2,499 for recent iPhones, with the final quote confirmed after a free diagnosis. The job takes 30–60 minutes at a proper bench. Be suspicious of ₹500 'OEM' batteries from marketplace sellers, low-grade cells often arrive with inflated capacity stickers and degrade within months, and the worst ones swell.

DIY kit or professional swap?

DIY battery kits look tempting at ₹800–1,500, but modern phones are glued shut, batteries are taped under fragile ribbon cables, and many models need adhesive softening and a battery health re-pairing step after the swap. One slipped pry tool near the display connector can turn a ₹1,500 job into a ₹7,000 one.

If your phone shows two or more of the signs above, get the battery tested properly before buying anything. Book a free diagnosis with Zerofix, we test real capacity and internal resistance on the bench, show you the numbers, and give you a clear quote before any work begins.

Seeing these symptoms on your own device?

Reading is step one. Step two is free: a bench diagnosis that tells you the real cause and the exact cost, before any work starts.
